Plastic waste has a huge negative effects on the environment, so how can you do your bit and help cut back?

Plastic is everywhere. It’s hard to imagine giving it up completely (although some people have). But opting for plastic-free choices will help lead a more sustainable and climate friendly life.

Here are five super easy things you can do on your way to a plastic free lifestyle!

1. Ditch The Plastic Bag

Did you know plastic bags have an average life of just 12 minutes?

In a lot of countries, shops have already started charging for plastic bags. Skip the waste of money and plastic by bringing your own reusable cloth bag. Tote bags are super cheap and easy to fold up and carry around.

2. Get Yourself a Reusable Coffee Cup

Many people are unaware that a lot of takeaway coffee cups are not actually recyclable, or at least not fully.

Even the cups that are recyclable often get chucked away anyway.

By purchasing a reusable coffee cup, you might even save yourself some money. Starbucks is just one coffee shop that offers money off drinks when you bring your own cup.

3. Invest in a Reusable Bottle

If you live somewhere that has safe to drink tap water, then you’ll also be saving yourself money if you choose a reusable bottle instead of buying bottled water.

If you don’t like the taste of tap water then look into filtered bottles.

4. Say no to Straws

Most of the time straws will only get used once – then they’re thrown away. They end up in landfills or in oceans – just check out what happened to this sea turtle when it encountered a straw (warning, not for the faint-hearted).

Next time you’re in a restaurant or bar ask them to leave the straw out of your order. Or maybe even bring your own reusable one.

5. Spread The Word

The more you share ideas with other people, the more those ideas will catch on. If someone asks why you’ve refused a straw – or why you’re bringing a cup into the coffee shop – just tell them you’re saving the planet!
